Chapter Eight

Such a perplexing little creature, his Brenna. Romulus studied her as his hands smoothed over her shoulders and back, down her arms and legs. Working away tension from taut muscles, stress from her overtaxed brain.

He loved aftercare. That glorious span of time after a good, focused session where his attention centered on his woman and only his woman. Where sex was set aside and the time spent building—or strengthening—the bond between dominant entity and submissive being.

His hands rejoiced, taking pride in their ownership of every curve and gentle slope of her body, learning every softness she had to offer.

She mewled a little, turned to him. Gorgeous amber eyes tried to focus on him as she lifted her arms. He didn’t need any more than that to cradle her against him, shifting to rest his back against the headboard and cuddle her. She sighed contentedly, leaning her head against his shoulder.

The minutes ticked away. It took six of them before he felt her consciousness slip deeper, finding sleep. An immeasurable gift of trust, he thought with a proud smile. That she had not only given him her submission but handed over her safety to him at her most vulnerable.

He sensed the presence outside the bedroom door before three tiny knocks echoed off the wood. He grunted quietly in acceptance, and his second in command slipped into the room like a hulking shadow. “Odie.”

“Romulus. Sorry to intrude.”

“Don’t be. Brenna’s sleeping. Pull up a seat.” In deference to her modesty—something she’d have to learn to overcome, as his people liked the freedom of nakedness—Romulus reached down and snagged a blanket from further down the bed, covering her where she rested in his arms. “I take it you’ve recovered from the troll attack, my brother?”

Odie nodded. “Better than ever. That was not a proud moment for me, Rom. I hope you know that.”

Rom shoved away the haunting sound of Odie’s dying wolf. “We all have those moments, Odie, especially in battle and the face of overwhelming mortal injuries. You were dying. If it had been your final wish to die there, like that, I would have let you. But there are bigger things planned for us all, and fucking trolls weren’t going to be the downfall for any of us.”

“Trolls weren’t. What about gremlins?”

Rom sighed and squeezed Brenna a little closer to him. “We stand to lose a good percentage of people if what Brenna’s seen comes to pass. I don’t know if we’d stand a better chance with our full regiment of pack, but I’d feel happier with them here.”

“We’ll be lucky if Mal’s even made it back home yet,” Odie pointed out.

“I know. Which means we have a few dozen shifters, a couple of vamps and us to take care of miniature demonic piranhas.” Rom laughed at the absurdity of it. “The problem is, these aren’t the worst of what Shax is going to send. He’s upping his game every time, and we’re holding ground. I don’t know how long we can just hold ground for.
