THE room around me swam.

What did Snake have all this cash for? My heart raced and my mind whirled with suppositions and theories. First and foremost, the story I saw on the news of that robbery in Cleveland flitted through my head. Hadn’t that anchorman mentioned a tattoo parlor being involved? Snake was a tattoo artist from Ohio with a bag full of money and a gun… oh, shit!

Could he be involved?

Had I hitched a ride with a fugitive on the lam?

The sharp squeak of cheap plumbing reached my ears as the shower turned off.

“Shit!”

Panicked, I hastily zipped up the duffel and returned to my seat on the edge of the other bed. I forced a deep breath and let it out slowly to try and reign in my pounding heart. My hands shook a little bit, and I told myself to calm down.

It was all circumstantial. I had proof of nothing, just the wild imaginings of a kid who had spent too many nights alone in his bedroom reading comic books and auto magazines. Following that skyjacking story had obviously filled my head with fantastic ideas too. There was no way I had been picked up by someone wanted by the FBI. Stuff like that didn’t happen in real life.

Besides, why did any of it matter? Snake and I would part ways tomorrow. I had my own life to worry about. Why should I care where all that money came from? For all I knew, the gun was his military-issued piece, and he had it for safety purposes. I’d already seen firsthand how dangerous traveling on the road could be.

I crossed my legs and bounced my foot impatiently, nibbling at my fingernails. I had to forget what I had seen, give him the benefit of the doubt. The past was the past. Snake had not judged me for sleeping around or for showing weakness and vulnerability, so I would not judge him either. Besides, since I had known him, he had done nothing but protect me and make me feel better about myself.

The door behind me opened, and I jumped, planting my feet flat on the floor and snatching my hand away from my mouth. Guilt burned behind my eyes when he stepped out of the bathroom.

“Somebody’s jumpy,” he observed.

My mouth gaped, trying to say something casual, but no sound came out. I swallowed hard.

Snake was completely naked.

Though not the first time I had seen him in all his glory, the sight of him still rendered me speechless. His long masculine body glistened from the shower, his hair matted in places. He wore nothing but his dog tags, and the contrast of his whiter legs to his tanned chest made me hungry for him. Though the snake tattoo was the brightest, his other ink colored him beautifully. Never before had I seen such a perfect male specimen.

Totally at ease with his nudity—and why wouldn’t he be, we’d already fucked—he patted down his jeans, looking for his Salems. After finding them, he picked up the matches on the desk.
