Flowers seemed weird and a teddy bear even weirder, so Ethan decided it might be safer not to bring a gift when he visited Jayce. The young man was sitting up and watching TV when Ethan identified himself to the police officer who was watching the door. Ethan didn't miss the flashes of relief and eagerness on Jayce's face when he entered the room, making Ethan doubly glad he'd decided to visit him.

"You look a lot better," Ethan told him, which was true. Either rest or the knowledge that he now had two professional bodyguards on his side had eased the lines on Jayce's young face and put some color into his cheeks.

"I feel okay," Jayce said, still cautious.

"I spoke with the nurses. They say you might be discharged either tonight or tomorrow afternoon. I bet you're glad to get out of here, huh?"

Jayce shrugged and picked at the sheet covering his legs. "Can't beat free food and cable."

"Well, they're not exactly free," Ethan said with a small smile. He didn't want to think about what Jayce's hospital bill was going to be or how he would pay it.

"I wanted to check up on you and give you a small update on what Max and I are doing," Ethan told him.

Jayce perked. "Yeah? What're you doing?"

"Max looked into the Vaults and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to get around you using the retinal scanner. The next time I need to keep something secret and private I know where I'm putting it," Ethan said with a small smile. Jayce stared back blankly, so Ethan cleared his throat and continued. "I'll accompany you there and we'll have the owner create a replacement set of keys which we'll give to Mike."

"How're you gonna get the keys to him?"

"Max will probably have them delivered or leave them where Mike can pick them up. We're going to avoid face to face contact with him. We'll need your help for that."

Jayce crossed his arms and grunted as he turned his head to look out the window.

"You'll help us with that won't you, Jayce?"

"'Course. I want to get him off my back, stop him from trying to kill me and shit."

"What are you going to do once he has control of the vault again?" Ethan asked him. "Do you think he'll leave you alone?"

"I dunno." The petulance and defensive were back and Ethan had a hard time understanding where they came from.

"Jayce," he began softly, leaning forward in his chair to rest his elbow on his knees. "You know I'm here to help you, right? My boss and I aren't going to let Mike or anyone else hurt you. You believe that, don't you? That we're on your side?"

"Took me being hit by a car for you to suddenly care what the hell happened to me," Jayce muttered as he cast a baleful look at Ethan.

Ethan sighed. "You're right. It did. I'm sorry I tried to brush you off before. There were some other issues involved but none of that really changes what I did.
