THIRTY-THREE

Edgar Newton Halsey carried a duffle bag as he made his way up the darkened street, then through the restaurant on the first floor of the building across from the Breakers. Once he was in the hallway, he took the elevator to an upper floor, taking care to avoid the floor where he’d previously encountered the nosy neighbor. After leaving the elevator, he made his way to the end of the corridor, where he was delighted to find his calculations had been correct. There was an outdoor balcony here with a direct view into Jack Powell’s apartment.

Halsey was angry the letter he’d left with the Post reporter hadn’t been acted upon. Bennett had written an article about Powell’s new assignment and posted the pictures of his dead wife, but nothing more had come of it. As far as he knew, his nemesis was still on the job.

Even killing Powell’s stupid shrink hadn’t changed things. He smiled, thinking about the haughty advice Wells had dispensed. In the end, she’d cried like a baby, begging for her miserable life. It was of no matter now. It was time to take things into his own hands and end the life of the asshole detective who had stalked him.

Getting his bearings, Halsey’s pulsed raced when he realized that Powell was on his balcony. But there was a problem. The detective was with a big guy, who he immediately made as another cop. His presence would make things difficult, but not impossible. He would have to take out both men, cutting down the big bastard seconds after he shot Powell.

He worked quickly, removing the barrel and the buttstock of the AR-7 long rifle. It took him only a couple of minutes to assemble the weapon and get it set up. As he looked through the scope, he drew a direct bead on Powell’s chest. This would be his final revenge. With Powell gone, he would only have the inept other detectives to deal with; cops who were no match for his skill and intelligence.

His finger tensed on the trigger at the same time the phone in his pocket vibrated. He considered ignoring the call but thought better of it. There was only one person who would be contacting him on his cell phone.

He put his weapon down and answered the call. “Hello, Julia.”

“You’re overdue. What’s the problem?”

He sucked in a breath. “I’ve been busy with work and other...”

“Why are you across from Powell’s apartment?”

He knew that Julia had tracked his location through his phone. He had no choice but to level with her. “As long as he’s alive, he’s a problem that needs to be eliminated.”

Julia’s tone was strident. “That’s not your priority. If you kill Powell, you’ll have a target on your back. Every cop in the city will be after you.”

“I can deal with that.”

Halsey heard Julia take a breath, then measure her words carefully. “Listen to me. You will stand down. Your priority is to bring me a girl. Powell is not to be eliminated.
