THIRTY-THREE
Edgar Newton Halsey carried a duffle bag as he made his way up the darkened street, then through the restaurant on the first floor of the building across from the Breakers. Once he was in the hallway, he took the elevator to an upper floor, taking care to avoid the floor where heâd previously encountered the nosy neighbor. After leaving the elevator, he made his way to the end of the corridor, where he was delighted to find his calculations had been correct. There was an outdoor balcony here with a direct view into Jack Powellâs apartment.
Halsey was angry the letter heâd left with the Post reporter hadnât been acted upon. Bennett had written an article about Powellâs new assignment and posted the pictures of his dead wife, but nothing more had come of it. As far as he knew, his nemesis was still on the job.
Even killing Powellâs stupid shrink hadnât changed things. He smiled, thinking about the haughty advice Wells had dispensed. In the end, sheâd cried like a baby, begging for her miserable life. It was of no matter now. It was time to take things into his own hands and end the life of the asshole detective who had stalked him.
Getting his bearings, Halseyâs pulsed raced when he realized that Powell was on his balcony. But there was a problem. The detective was with a big guy, who he immediately made as another cop. His presence would make things difficult, but not impossible. He would have to take out both men, cutting down the big bastard seconds after he shot Powell.
He worked quickly, removing the barrel and the buttstock of the AR-7 long rifle. It took him only a couple of minutes to assemble the weapon and get it set up. As he looked through the scope, he drew a direct bead on Powellâs chest. This would be his final revenge. With Powell gone, he would only have the inept other detectives to deal with; cops who were no match for his skill and intelligence.
His finger tensed on the trigger at the same time the phone in his pocket vibrated. He considered ignoring the call but thought better of it. There was only one person who would be contacting him on his cell phone.
He put his weapon down and answered the call. âHello, Julia.â
âYouâre overdue. Whatâs the problem?â
He sucked in a breath. âIâve been busy with work and other...â
âWhy are you across from Powellâs apartment?â
He knew that Julia had tracked his location through his phone. He had no choice but to level with her. âAs long as heâs alive, heâs a problem that needs to be eliminated.â
Juliaâs tone was strident. âThatâs not your priority. If you kill Powell, youâll have a target on your back. Every cop in the city will be after you.â
âI can deal with that.â
Halsey heard Julia take a breath, then measure her words carefully. âListen to me. You will stand down. Your priority is to bring me a girl. Powell is not to be eliminated.
