Epilogue

JUDD raced down the bank to the dam. He was up to thirty miles an hour when his front tire hit a stick.

Judd swerved and slammed on the brakes. He stopped a few feet short of the edge. Maybe this was God’s way of telling me to stop, he thought.

Judd turned around and cleared the path, making sure there were no hidden obstacles. He took the bike farther back and revved the engine again.

“If you don’t want me to do this, God,” Judd said out loud, “then stop me.”

Judd plunged down the hill and picked up speed. He was going thirty-five before he made it to the pavement. He knew he had enough speed, but something felt wrong.

He was still bouncing when he hit the concrete, like he was on uneven ground. The speedometer said 40

mph. Judd slammed on the brakes. He heard thunder and felt the dam rocking.

Aftershock, Judd thought.

He was nearing the edge, sliding, burning rubber, when he realized he was not going to stop. He put the bike down and slid with it to the edge. The motorcycle, still running, plunged over the side. Judd put out his hands and grabbed the railing. His momentum nearly took him over, but he managed to hold on, his feet dangling over the edge.

He looked below and saw the green motorcycle splash into the murky water. It floated a moment, then sank.

Judd held on. The water seemed to rush by faster. He couldn’t survive the fall, and the current would take him if he did. He tried to get a foothold on the side of the dam, but the concrete crumbled with each try.

OK, Judd thought, I guess I wasn’t supposed to do that. Now what.

He was alone, hanging on for his life, the earth shaking again, and there was no one to help him.
