Once home, Shane intentionally pulled in behind Lilith rather than beside her vehicle. The Sierra would have to be moved in order for her to get out.

She seemed not to notice. At least she didn’t give him any grief about it. “I’m going to take a bubble bath, try to relax. That was just insane!” She walked into the house.

“Sure. Take your time.” Shane paused outside. He closed the door and meandered about in the front yard, looking at his home from a different perspective. The neo-classical brick home was sturdy. Stairs led up either side of the porch to the main level which was elevated five feet from the ground. Even the Roman pillars on the porch gave the home the feeling of being a fortress. The four floor-to-ceiling windows were the obvious weak points from the front of the house. But even they were narrow, limiting the vulnerability.

Shane’s phone rang. “Derrick, is everything okay?”

“Yeah, bud. Thanks to you. I appreciate what you did for Bridgette. I didn’t even know what was going on until she called.”

“No problem. You’d have done the same for me. I know she doesn’t like to take orders, but you need to make her stay home. I understand what it’s like to try managing someone who’s high-maintenance, but things are bad out there.”

Derrick exhaled. “Lilith is high-maintenance. Bridgette is about five levels up from that. I’m not even sure what they call it.”

Shane laughed. “We all like having a pit bull on our side when she’s negotiating a contract with the record company.”

Derrick sighed. “I could handle a pit bull, but Bridgette’s more like a velociraptor. And it’s not like she has a switch so she only gets prehistoric when she’s working. Trust me, you don’t know how good you’ve got it.”

“Do what you’ve got to do. Just don’t let her go back out.”

“I won’t. I’ll have a talk with her when she gets home.”

“She’s not home yet?” Shane asked.

“No. But I just got off the phone with her. She’s on her way.”

“We’re two miles further from Kroger than you. Plus we had to cross the parking lot. She should have beat us home.”

“Yeah, I think she’s going to try to find some gas.”

Shane shook his head. “That’s a mistake. She should have gone straight home.”

“I know, but what can you do?”

“Stay safe. I’ll talk to you later.” Shane ended the call and resumed assessing his home for security concerns.
