If I didn’t get exam help at school, will I be able to get exam help at college?
If you think you might need exam help at college, talk to your tutors and to the learning support department as early as possible in your course. They should then start to look at whether you will be eligible. Don’t leave it until near to exam time – you might miss the deadline!
What if I am embarrassed about asking for help in exams?
With developments in technology, it is possible to become more independent with the help you might need. For example, if you needed a human reader at school, you might wish to try a computer reader, or a reading pen, which reads text back to you.
If you needed someone to write what you said (a scribe) at school, you might wish to try dictation software instead. You dictate to a computer and it types what you say.
If your handwriting is not good, you could use a word processor instead of a scribe.
All of this technology is also allowed in exams if you have been assessed as eligible.
Using technology at college instead of human support not only allows you to be in control and more independent, but can also help to prepare you for the world of work or for university, where there is normally less support available. Chapter 7 gives more information on some of the technology available.
