2. CONCENTRATE ON THE CONTENT OF THE TEXT

As you begin to look at the text in detail, keep your plan of the structure in view. Then you’ll always know whereabouts you are in the chapter, and how the part you are reading relates to what you have already read. Being clear about the structure of the chapter will free your mind to take in more of the meaning.

Let’s take a subsection of Chapter 3 in more detail: section B.e. on phonological skills (see page 30).

While reading this subsection, concentrate fully on its topic – phonology – and don’t let your mind dart about to other sections of the chapter. Also note how this particular subsection is structured.

You’ll find two main types of information:

A reminder of what phonology is: recognising, pronouncing and sequencing sounds.

A description of relevant assessment tasks. Two types of task are described: reading nonsense words alone and in text, so you could label these 2a and 2b.
