I walked inside the house. Terrific. I’ve turned out to be the idiot who heard a backfire and immediately concocted some crazy story about my car being broken into. Heat flushed through my cheeks. Even worse, my imagination had the car rigged for a bomb, ready to blow me to bits. Not to mention how those two guys acted like strutting roosters, which irritated the heck out of me. Still, they both had a point.

Maybe my mom was taking a toll on me. I just needed to take the first step and get the letter written. I’d probably feel a lot better after it was finished.

Decision made, I wrote well into the night. In it, I included everything I’d ever wanted to say, every thought, ever question. After re-reading it, I tore it up and wrote a watered-down version which amounted to a weird introduction and confessing that I missed and loved her.
