DUKE

The first thing Grace asks when she gets into my car makes me laugh.

“You’re not kidnapping me, are you?”

“No.”

“Well, what about Scarlett?” she continues, waving towards her friend waiting on the pavement outside the car.

Scarlett bends down to window height before I can answer. “I’m fine,” she tells Grace.

“No, you’re not. I’m not leaving you alone. Get in.”

“She’s fine,” I say to Grace.

“Stop being so rude,” she barks back at me. “I’m not leaving her on her own.”

Scarlett laughs. “I’m truly fine, Grace. I’ll get a taxi back to King’s.”

Grace’s eyes narrow. “You sure?”

“You two have a good time. Take good care of her, Duke.”

I nod at Scarlett and then put my foot down on the pedal, joining the traffic heading out of Notting Hill.

I take in Grace sitting next to me. I want her. All of her. Right now, I just want to kiss her full lips and feel her tits. It’s so intoxicating sitting next to someone you know you can’t have.

She’s seen my most intimate secret. Damien’s family. I let her into something I’ve never shown anyone else. I’ve been more vulnerable in front of her than I’ve been with my own family.

Grace, it is safe to say, is not like any other girl.

And we still haven’t spoken about what we truly want for each other.

Well, I want her.

But does she want me?

That question has been burning in my head ever since I dropped her home after meeting Audrey and the kids.

And now I’m going to get my answer. I’ve not been able to think of anything else for the last day. I need to know what she’s thinking.

“Where are you taking me?” Grace asks.

“You’ll see.”

“You really like saying that don’t you, Duke? You think you’re so cool and sexy when you’re being so secretive.”

“Are you saying I’m not sexy and cool?”

Grace falls silent and I smile to myself.

“I got you this,” I say, reaching over to the passenger seat behind me.

“What is it?”

I hand Grace a rose. She stares at me, gripping it between her fingers.

“It’s like you; beautiful but also full of thorns.”

“Thank you,” she replies. “No one has ever got me a flower before.”

I smirk. “Well, now I’m your first.”

“Shut up, Duke.”

“And there’s that thorny side of you,” I reply. “Right on time.”

“Just focus on the road and try not to kill us both,” she retorts.

I chuckle and change gear.

I wouldn’t change that thorny side of her for the world.
