OGOPOGO VS. GIANT EEL: WRATH OF THE OKANAGAN LAKE GOD

The semi-trailer truck lay still in the two and a half meters of glassy water near the peaceful and pebbly Antlers Beach. The truck looked like it was on the verge of turning into a derelict as small waves rippled between the barely closed cargo-trailer doors. The light overcast sky held impressions of the sun trying to decide whether it will show itself. The mix of light and cloud projected an almost whitish glow onto the area.

Okanagan Lake reflected the light as the lake silently watched the clouds echo the smooth watery surface. However, beneath the lake’s surface the murkiness and deep depths suggest concealment of a mysterious lost world. This steep underwater realm was dark, unexplored, and suggestive of another presence that found a perfect home in such a mysterious domain.

This and other thoughts plagued Chad Armand Chubb, age 49, as he lay shivering on the beach. Covered in a towel, he watched several RCMP officers directing a tow-truck to the semi-submerged truck in the lake.

In truth, he was the driver of the semi that now lay in the water. Long story short, he was carrying a piece of cargo that two mysterious individuals wanted him to get to Vancouver as quickly as possible. Being forty-something years old and a practical guy, Chad suspected these two guys to be part of the black market but couldn’t be sure. Pulling out of the cargo holding area and hitting the highway, Chad felt all questions concerning the men beginning to bother him.

Why were they so in a hurry to get the cargo on the truck?

Couldn’t they have waited for another, better trucker?

These and many other questions assailed his conscience before becoming too tired for his own good -- until he nearly ran into a car. He turned hard to the right before hitting the water. The things he remembered vividly were getting out of the truck with water pushing against him and finally breaking free before he swam towards shore. He recalled nearly conking out before having the mind to find help.

Chad sighed as a wave of guilt washed over him as he stared at the truck lying still in the water. Despite his stupid choice to not pay attention to the road, he felt he had a responsibility to own up to his actions and he was pretty sure he would get fired after the recovery was complete.

“Sir, can you come around here?”

The officer who called to him seemed to be heading toward the cargo holding area of the semi. This officer was focused on the rear doors of the truck, both of which were open, strangely.

Chad snapped out of his thoughts and waded into the water as a new question popped into his head. As he trudged through the water, all five officers craned their necks at the opened cargo doors. When Chad approached, none of the officers moved in the slightest. He also noticed then that the doors were ajar, which was odd because he was sure he had closed them.
