Chapter Eighteen

The likelihood that the home was his seemed slim. As Sara stared at it, she tried to visualize a vicious killer living in it, and she couldn’t bring herself to visualize that. It was very unusual to the narrative that typically accompanied serial killers. This was for normal people. A house in the suburbs and all the trappings that went with it. It just didn’t seem to be the place for a guy like that. How did he manage the double life, if it was indeed the residence of Tommy Pope?

Sara thought for a moment that she saw movement behind a window, a shadow, the hint of a face looking out at her. She shivered. No, it couldn’t be. Just her imagination.

Her plan was to stay there for as long as necessary, to see someone arriving or leaving. Maybe it would be Tommy and she’d finally have found the bastard. God, what she wouldn’t do to get to him first, to make sure he didn’t shout something horrendous about what she’d done with her father all those years ago.

If nothing happened for long enough, Sara planned to get out and knock on the door, to ask if whoever lived there had seen a face like Tommy’s. The idea of doing that made her stomach twist in knots, but at this point there was almost nothing Sara wouldn’t do to prevent her secret from getting out.

Her phone buzzed, startling her. She jumped and then fumbled for it where she kept it on a magnet on her dashboard. She didn’t have a chance to note who it was before she was saying hello.

‘Hunt, it’s Lopez. You all right?’

‘Yeah, Eric, I’m fine. Fine. What’s going on?’

‘That’s it? Fine? Where are you? Did you check out the address?’

‘I did. I mean, I’m there now. It just seems off. It’s a nice neighborhood, where normal people live. Families. Elementary schools with high test scores, probably. I can’t really see a dangerous killer making this his cover.’

‘Well, then you’ll be able to dig deeper, because I have good news. We got a warrant to search the property.’

‘A warrant? Really?’

‘This is the best lead we have, and the judges don’t like people getting brutally murdered by a psycho. They’re wanting to find this killer, and fast. Besides, it’s the address of an alias. We had a fingerprint, and there’s been enough witnesses in the neighborhood to say that the male who lives there is unusual.’

‘Right, right. Of course.’

‘You okay?’

‘Yes. This case is just getting to me.’

‘I hear you. I really do. It’s doing a number on me, as well. I think after this, I’ll never have my own kids.’

‘I feel the same. Have, for a long time.’

‘Don’t go in yet. Wait for backup. There are two patrol cars on their way. I’m supposed to tell you those are the captain’s orders. Got it? Wait till they arrive to knock on the door. This guy is after you and none of us want you to get hurt.’

Her pulse quickened at the news that backup was on the way.
