Fitting Right In

The house we rented in Newton was only four blocks from the high school, so I skated over on my first day and saw immediately that Newton was no Melrose. There was an outdoor area called “the mall” that had a stage and stairs where kids were skateboarding! In the front of the school there were slanted walls that were perfect for wallriding, and no adults were around saying, You can’t skate here! The school itself was much more open and liberal, more like a college campus. If I had a class, I went to it; but if I didn’t have a class, I could go home, get something to eat, and come back later. I didn’t need hall passes, and it didn’t feel like a prison. And most surprising to me, the football players didn’t rule, and nobody was put down for looking different.

Right away I met the school’s skaters—we were hard to miss, wearing our skate logo T-shirts and thrashed Airwalks. It was so easy: “Hey, dude, you skate?” and new friendships began. I also met lots of kids who weren’t skaters, but who were just good people and welcomed me without hesitation. One guy was Dan Worth, who knew a good friend of mine, Liz Chang, from my church youth group. On my first day of school he came right up to me and said, “Hey, you’re Andy Macdonald, right?” Because Dan was down with a lot of popular kids in school, right away I was too. How could I ever have thought twice about coming here? Change is good.
