Chapter Three

The next morning, Jennifer was up early and went down to the restaurant for a fat blueberry muffin and coffee to take to her room along with the weekend edition of the Northwoods Courier newspaper. She climbed back in bed for her breakfast and to read the news of the area, which featured an upcoming snowmobile race.

The day stretched ahead of her until Susan returned so she got dressed and took her camera to explore the area around the resort. As she looked at the fresh snow and took some pictures, Jennifer’s thoughts were of being with Susan again. Their last day together. The roads, parking lot, and paths were plowed so she started her car to clear her windshield and brushed the snow from her car.

Jennifer tramped around the paths near the resort for almost an hour, and when she returned to the resort the small gift shop had opened. Browsing in the shop, she looked for a present for Susan. Most of the items were north-woodsy souvenirs of the area. Then she saw a silver necklace holding a snowshoe on a thin chain.

The clerk, a middle-aged woman with a kind smile, watched as Jennifer held it up and examined it. “Isn’t that darling? If it’s a present I can gift-wrap it.”

“Please do.” How could it be a Christmas present if it wasn’t gift-wrapped? Jennifer returned to her room and, finally, at one got dressed for snowshoeing and went down to the lobby to wait for Susan.

A little before one-thirty, the group of six arrived laughing and stomping the snow from their boots. Susan saw Jennifer on a couch near the wall in the lobby, waved, came over, and sat next to her. Close enough that their legs were touching.

“I’m so glad we got back in time, Jennifer.”

“How were the town and your lunch?”

Susan glanced at the group and back to Jennifer. “It was okay. We had lunch at some Swedish-themed place. I just had a salad and couldn’t wait for it to end so I could come back and go snowshoeing with you.” She looked at Jennifer with an expression that made Jennifer’s heart skip a beat.

Jennifer looked at her watch. “We have plenty of time before dark. Today, let’s do the longer trail.”

“Great. I’ll just run up and change.” She touched Jennifer’s arm. “Be right back.”

In the Activity Lodge, a young man had replaced Jim. He didn’t appear happy about spending his Christmas Day working at the resort as he silently fastened Susan’s snowshoes. “Enjoy yourselves,” he mumbled as Jennifer and Susan clomped to the door.

The temperature had dropped as often happened after a snowfall, but the sun shone on the fresh new snow as they put on their sunglasses and started off.

Thirty minutes later a family with two teen-agers came rushing up behind them and they both stepped off the path to let the family pass. Jennifer remembered when she first saw Susan looking at the brochure.

“When I met you in the lobby looking at a brochure, I thought you were here with your husband and children.
