The Sexiest Man In Mexico

Not every wandering pilgrim on the Margarita Road is looking for a permanent break from reality. For some, the journey is a temporary escape from a daily routine that isn’t working so well anymore. They want an experience to shake things up that will be more than a vacation but less than a lifetime. After hanging out on the beach for a while, they can return with a new attitude to the old life they left behind. It’s a very good plan, as long as your feet don’t get stuck in the sand.

The sexiest man in Mexico was a short, pudgy American. He was not particularly good looking. In fact, he had never thought of himself as being very attractive. Yet there was no denying it: my friend Lucas had something going on with the ladies of Paradise Beach.

We met when he came into my bar one night with an attractive señorita. They took a spot on the deck where the breezes off the beach kept the candles on the tables flickering. She ordered a margarita, and he had a Coke. I didn’t pay them much attention, but when she went to the ladies room, he made a beeline toward me. When he reached the bar, he leaned over and spoke in a soft voice. “Can I ask you a small favor?”

I gave him a noncommittal nod of the head. You learn in the bar business not to agree to anything until you know the whole story.

“I’m kind of new in town, and I was hoping to take this girl someplace nice for dinner. Any suggestions on a good restaurant? Something a little high end.” That type of favor I could handle, but I had to think for a moment. High was not my normal end.

“The Happy Lobster might work. White linen tablecloths, guacamole made at the table. Pick your own lobster from the tank. A little touristy, but still good. She’ll be suitably impressed.”

Lucas gave a relieved smile, said thanks, and offered a hand as he introduced himself. I took it and told him to call me Poppa. “How long are you around town for?” I asked.

“I don’t really know yet. I’m teaching English over at the language academy. I have a three-month contract, but if I like it, I may stay longer.” He grinned. “At this point, I still get lost about twice a day.”

He seemed like a good guy, so I told him he could stop by whenever he needed some help. “I’m here most days.”

A frown suddenly crossed his face. “I’m a friend of Bill’s,” he said a little defensively.

“And I’m not, so we have that in common.” He hesitated only a second before laughing. “Seriously,” I added, “come whenever you want. I make a great cup of coffee.”

“I will,” he promised.

His companion arrived back at the bar, slipped her arm around his waist, and kissed him gently on the neck as she pressed against him. I remember thinking to myself that maybe he didn’t need to impress her much after all.
