The next morning, Sig woke with a pounding head. He had slept only a few hours, but for some reason his mind had forced him to get up. Something strange happened. He remembered the day before. He remembered the conversation he had had with Donna. The details were sketchy at best, but he refreshed his memory with his notebook. Something had finally broken loose with his brain in the last couple of days.

He was reading his notebook when Mai Lu woke up and sat up in bed, the blanket falling away from her bare breasts and her nipples coming to life with the chilled air.

“Good morning, Mai Lu,” Sig said. He put down his notebook and came to her, taking a seat on the bed next to her and kissing her on the cheek and then the lips.

“You remember?” She ran her fingers along the stubble on his face and then to the base of his neck.

“Yeah. Well, not everything. But my head is killing me.”

“Hang over,” she said. “Never seen you drink that much.”

He moved his hand down to her breast and put her nipple between his fingers. “Maybe the alcohol let me remember things from yesterday. Whatever it is, I’m glad I didn’t have to try to remind myself of this.” He smiled and squeezed her round breast slightly. Then he kissed her passionately on the lips until she pulled away. “What’s the matter?”

She lay back down onto her back and covered herself with the blankets. “I don’t know. Maybe you won’t like me once you remember.”

Cocking his head to the side in thought, he said, “Why would you think that?”

“When one thinks they know the answers, they are difficult to guide,” she said. “When one knows that they don’t know the answers, they can guide themselves.”

“You think that I know the answers?” Sig said. “I don’t know shit.”

“You know that you don’t know.”

“True. But I will always need you. I will always love you.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Then I should be easy to guide?” He smiled at her and then lay down next to her.

Laughing first, Mai Lu quickly turned serious. “But you don’t understand. What if our life was not perfect before you were shot? What if we had problems?”

He closed his eyes and tried to envision what she had just suggested. Then he opened his eyes and turned toward her. “I know that I am out of balance now. Yet, I can’t imagine any scenario where I did not love you.”

“It wasn’t a matter of love, Sig. I always believed that you loved me, but things were not perfect.”

“There’s no way I could have cheated on you.”

She shook her head. “Not that. We had fought for some time over other things.”

“Like?”

“Your work. You had to travel a lot. But you were working on a story in Oregon, Portland and Salem, that had consumed you. I believed Donna last night when she said you had called your old friend, Ronny. I saw the charges later on your cell phone bill.
