Chapter Ten

Regan

After I leave Tatiana in Tempest’s capable hands, I sit down with the king and his council to finalize the tour details. Everyone seems really pleased with the upcoming joint venture and furthering the relationships between the realms. King Florian confirms that the initial tour will be the first week in November and hands me over to his prime minister to nail down the details since he has other things to attend to. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Aven and his dour expression.

“Hang on, Father. What’s in it for us?” His father frowns at him. “No, the witches are benefitting from this, but the fae get nothing out of it apart from ‘good relations.’ Don’t glare at me. I would be a poor future ruler if I didn’t think about my people.” His tone is condescending, and I can see various aides around the table rolling their eyes, but everyone looks at me.

“The fae market is on the tour, so I would assume revenue for the vendors. Don’t forget there are more opportunities for the fae to travel to our realm as well.”

“Pff, why would the fae want to travel to a dirty realm like Earth?”

I look at King Florian, and he is scowling at his oldest child, but he doesn’t step in.

“I guess if the tours work, then the opportunity to extend them to lengthy vacations or even relocation are options. Again, more revenue for the fae.”

“Visas. I want every person to visit the fae realm to pay for a visa,” he announces to the room. “That should be fair compensation to my people.”

The council erupts into protests, and the annoyance I’m feeling surges into anger. “You forget that we operate the portal. It was gifted to us by our goddess, and we can easily cut the fae realm off.”

The crown prince shoots me a look filled with venom and sneers, “Be very careful with your threats. You may find they are empty if we don’t care that we are cut off.”

I smile at him. “Are you sure you want the gateway to all the other realms permanently closed? How would your people feel then?”

The council members are shaking their heads and muttering.

The king leans closer to the prince, a furious look on his face, but I can’t hear what he is saying around the chatter.

The advisor to my left snorts under his breath. “Yeah, right, like the people will ever see any of it.”

I raise a questioning eyebrow, but he shakes his head and clamps his lips shut, refusing to elaborate, but the prince is too busy arguing with the king to notice.

“Silence!” the king shouts. “There will be no visa to start with, and we will reassess the situation after the first couple of groups.”

The crown prince has a smug look on his face as he leans back in his chair with his arms crossed.

The king closes the meeting, and everyone stands around the table as he and Aven leave the room, taking a lot of the tension with them.
