Epilogue

“Hell, no.” Quinn glared at Taylor as a bright orange oak leaf fell between them. The entire population of Blarney Flats had attended their October wedding, and Keely had acted as flower girl.

Now, after the church wedding, at which Taylor wore the classic, long white bridal gown, Quinn held her hand while they cut the tall, layered cake. He licked away the frosting from the piece she had placed in his mouth and scowled down at her set expression. “No. You won’t give Maudie’s land and the lake to the town as your dowry. It’s enough that we’ll be living in your house.”

She forced a tight smile. “Quinn, dear. This is our wedding day. Your family is here. I thought the announcement would please you.”

“Yes,” Cade agreed, lifting his mug of beer in a toast and grinning. “Quinn Daniel, be pleased and behave yourself.”

Taylor blew away her bridal veil, which was fluttering along her cheek. She pushed another piece of cake into Quinn’s mouth. “I’ve made up my mind. You gave me that lovely bridal chest, Quinn. A dowry is customary in Blarney Flats. If you act like a chauvinistic—”

She took another deep breath and smiled while people took wedding pictures of the happy bride and groom. She began again, “If you throw a hissy fit now, Quinn Donovan... the wedding is off.”

He smiled smugly. “We’re already married, Tay darlin’. You said your I-do’s. I’ve got you. You’re mine.”

“Oh... well, then... if I can’t give my bridal dowry, you can stay at the millhouse. I’ll give the land and the lake anyway.”

“Donovan, she’s got you beat,” Moriarity murmured. “In another minute she’ll be tossing the wedding cake at you.”

“Sure livens things up with you two deciding to live here,” Lyle Flynn tossed in.

“Okay, let’s negotiate. It’s the men-only hour— or rather two hours, Quinn darling... or the land as my dowry. Take it or leave it.”

“Quinn. Do something,” Moriarity said quickly, fear creeping into his tone.

“That’s blackmail,” Quinn said, bending to lick away the frosting clinging to her bottom lip. “If I’m staying at the millhouse, so can my wife.”

Taylor tilted her head, kissed him softly, then sucked slightly on his bottom lip. “Too bad, Quinn darling. Give over, boyo. I want to give the land to the people Maudie loved. She would have loved the land as my dowry, just as much as I love you.”

He smiled at her with the love that would last until eternity. “Fine.”

“Thank God, the men-only hour is saved.” Moriarity cheered with the other men, but Quinn was walking away from the church, carrying his bride.

Two years later, Quinn leaned against the post on Maudie’s front porch and watched Keely bounce down the steps wearing her brand-new first-grade clothes. Digger wanted to follow at Keely’s heels as usual, and howled unhappily from the back porch.

Keely stopped on the walkway and looked back at Quinn. His daughter grinned widely as Taylor came out the front door. “Bye, Mommy. When I get home, I’ll tell you everything that happened.
