HAMAJI’S LOWER lip quivered when Tamazusa and Aboshi faded away, like she had just realized that her husband had left.

“They’ll be all right,” I reassured her. “Let’s see what McGann looks like. Sakura lit out like his ass was on fire when he heard she was bitchin’ about how uncomfortable the outfit was.”

“A formal kimono isn’t the most comfortable thing to wear,” Hamaji said as she started toward McGann’s room. McGann was rooming over near Tamazusa in the other wing of the castle. Thankfully, Helga wasn’t rooming with her or there would have been blood on the floor, because the two weren’t getting along at all. Helga was staying near Fuse-hime, half being her gofer by running errands for her and half being some sort of fix-up project for her. I didn’t think that part was working too well, because Helga was still a raging bitch most of the time.

“He thinks it is.” I shrugged. “But he likes playing dress-up.”

“I don’t think Sakura has ever had to deal with a formal wig,” Hamaji said. “I found that very uncomfortable the few times I had to wear one.”

“McGann isn’t wearing one,” I said. “They want to show off her gaijin-ness, her being a blonde and all.”

“I don’t think that is a word,” Hamaji told me, sounding amused. “And Sakura is very elegant. He could be an onnagata.”

“A what?” I asked her, since it wasn’t one of the Japanese words I knew.

“They are men who play the women’s roles in Kabuki and Noh plays,” Hamaji explained to me. “They act like women both on and off stage. They are thought to be the feminine ideal and what every woman should study for style and grace.”

“Sounds interesting,” I said. I paused for a second, checking to see that there wasn’t someone within earshot. There were people watching us, I didn’t doubt that—they weren’t going to leave the boss’s wife alone with the strangers who had been dragged home, especially since Tamazusa had done most of the dragging. “And I was used to seeing him in sweats, so it’s kind of a shock.”

“You don’t seem to be the one having trouble with it,” she remarked tartly.

I bit back a groan, since I knew who she was talking about. For once, it wasn’t me who was pissing off the nice folks. Wolf didn’t seem to have settled in here like McGann and I had. I knew McGann was happy. She was a little worried because she hadn’t always been totally honest with them, but she had charmed everyone here. She was treated like one of the family. Keno was giving her language lessons—Wolf couldn’t, because he didn’t know the female dialect, whatever that meant—and Hamaji and Fuse-hime acted like she was one of the girls. Hinaginu wasn’t as buddy-buddy, but it wasn’t like her to be that way. McGann had a family here, and I knew she hadn’t had one for a while.

“I’ll tell him he’s being an asshole,” I said, knowing who she was talking about, and then groaned.
