Kit didn’t relax until she got into the bathroom and had locked the door behind her. Only then did she allow herself to become visible again. The enormity of what she had just done sank into her brain. By sheer force of will, she had made herself invisible. No one could do that. It just wasn’t any more possible than her shoulder simply melting out of the grasp of the first assailant or sliding through a barely opened door or of making the jump she had from the sidewalk onto the landing. Yet, she had done those things last night, just as she had become invisible now. This just wasn’t possible.

Oh, she and Nana Grey used to play at being invisible. They had played at being animals. Those had been good games. Pretend games. Over the years, she had convinced herself that they had just been nothing more than childhood games of imagination, or had they been more than games?

What was real? Was she going mad? Was this all a strange dream? Would she awaken in her efficiency apartment and find herself alone with none of this being anything but a nightmare?

She sighed. Then she held out her hands in front of her. If she could make them invisible, what else could she do?

Kit visualized her hands become bear claws. They morphed into sharp-nailed, fur-covered, claws. Then she dismissed the mental imagery and her hands were simply her hands once more.

Insanity. She had gone insane. That was the only reasonable explanation. Yet, people who were insane didn’t know it, did they? So if she thought herself insane then maybe she wasn’t. Oh God. That was too convoluted of a thought, even for her.

None of the happenings of the last few hours made sense. It didn’t make any sense to her that there were really vampires on the prowl. Yet Carl had confirmed that. That she had been attacked by two of them only hours ago and survived made even less sense. What would they want with her?

She sighed as she walked over to the vanity and took a toothbrush and toothpaste in her hands. Normality. That’s what she needed, large doses of normality. What could be more normal than brushing her teeth? She had done that every morning of her life since she could remember.

Memories. They were strange things, she decided, as she looked in the mirror. For years, she had dismissed her memories of shape-shifting games with Nana as childhood games of pretend and her vivid imagination. She has consigned them to the realms of childish fantasy. Yet if those hadn’t been pretend games with Nana Grey, what had they been? Some kind of early childhood training, perhaps? Oh, come on, Kit, get real. No one had those kinds of abilities. The ability to change form was outside of the range of things that human beings did. This was the stuff of bad science fiction.

And yet she had done amazing things in the last few hours; things she couldn’t explain rationally.
