THE HORSE’S SAFETY

When it comes to the phenomenon of possession, we have to honestly say that talking about “safe” possession is like talking about “safe” sex. There’s really no such thing as absolute safety in either of them. Both are amazing and intense experiences that can cause all kinds of trouble if and when you get involved with them. It’s no accident that experts are now pushing the use of the term “safer sex.” Not only is there no such thing as a foolproof birth-control or disease-prevention method, there are also the emotional repercussions of having sex, and of not having it. Sex can open up your body and heart in ways you didn’t expect, and leave you vulnerable to psychological damage, just as it can equally possibly heal you of such damage. Some people can thrive on celibacy and abstinence; for others, that causes more emotional problems than having sex. The gift of the Love Goddesses is sacred, and anything that is that sacred is also powerful and beautiful and terrible and awe-inspiring … and never, ever completely safe.

Possession is like that as well. Opening one’s flesh to be a container for something of the realm of spirit is indescribably amazing, as is being the close outsider who is able to see those things of the spirit in fleshly eyes for once. It is also impossible to make completely safe, because the gods and spirits are never safe. However, like sex, one can at least take some basic precautions to eliminate most of the dangers, and accept the other risks as a possibility.

Being a “human suit” for something that is not human is a physically and psychically stressful activity. Even calling smaller spirits down through yourself can be wearing on your soul-stuff, and when the astral body is stressed, that reverberates into the physical body, in as much as the two are tied together until we leave the second one behind entirely at our final death. When it’s something even bigger than you are, it can leave you weak or tattered or hollowed out, at least temporarily. A horse whose physical and psychic safety needs are well taken care of is a horse who won’t get burned out nearly as quickly.

To this end, the horse needs to start with taking care of his- or herself. First, they should take stock of their condition. Are they physically capable of the demands? If they are just getting over the flu, or had a terrible argument with their partner, or got no sleep the night before, it might be wise to see if it can be put off. Do they have a heart condition, a seizure disorder, or any other physical condition that might be exacerbated by possession? That doesn’t mean that possession can’t happen, but they will need to pray and speak first to whoever wants the ride so as to be careful of the physical issues. Some spirits—especially gods—can do things with a body that one wouldn’t think that body could be capable of.
