Chapter Eight

I fell in love with Clara Booras the following night.

She took one look at me, gave Martin a wink, hugged me to her chest, and then spent the rest of the evening mothering me. Maybe that was part of why I loved her so much so quickly. I’d not realized just how starved I’d been for that kind of attention. Yes, I had my adopted aunts, and they had stepped in well right after Mom had died. I knew that Morgan and Naomi loved me, but they tended to really shower BJ with their affections, and that was cool because she was a girl and needed that feminine guiding hand. It was just…well, I’d needed it too but whatever. It was easy to sit back and pick apart people who had been doing their best in a really hard time.

Clara had one of those old souls you hear about. She was only in her mid-forties like Martin, but she fussed like a grandma, which she would be soon so yeah, okay, that all made sense. She was a tall woman, lean, with kinky black hair and a complexion that told of a Mediterranean ancestry. Her clothes were light and airy, with a real love child feel. Lots of bangles, bead necklaces, and big hoop earrings that were always tangled in her wild hair. She drank lots of wine, laughed loudly, and hugged at the drop of a hat. Also, she was wearing black chucks. With her white witchy look. It was incredible. She was incredible.

“So, tell me, Jackie Blue, what a glorious name! Tell me about how you met my Martin. Did he swoop in and pull you from a flaming yacht?”

“Ignore her,” Martin said, returning from the kitchen with two fresh glasses of white wine for them and a flute of sparkling grape juice for me. “She likes to spin romance tales from thin air.”

“Mm, thank you, Martin.” She took a small sip of her white wine. “And romance is best spun out of air. After all, we all require air to survive just as we require love. I can tell you two are falling quickly for each other.” I blushed. Martin made a grumpy sort of sound. “Don’t argue with me, Martin. I know you far too well. The way you look at Jackie when he doesn’t know you’re looking at him tells it all.” She waved a long finger thick with silver rings at the man seated beside me. Martin said nothing, but his cheeks did get a little ruddy. I kissed him on the shoulder.

“No, no fire. We met after a hockey game,” I replied, kicking off my shoes and pulling my legs up under my backside. I’d dressed demurely for this meeting, not knowing what to expect. Just some brown leggings and a burnt orange corduroy jumper that I’d made last year. The jumper was over a long-sleeve black turtleneck that I’d jazzed up with some sparkles around the collar. As I said, subdued. Now that I knew Clara better I’d be totally comfortable with going really femme around her.
