Chapter 9

Afterschool the next day Zach rode his bicycle downtown, parked in front of Dunnigan’s, and waited for Sam, who joined him a short while later.

“Seen any dragons today?” she asked when she arrived.

“Not yet. I have a feeling it’ll attack again, but I have no idea which building.”

“And what are you going to do when it attacks again?”

It was a very good question. Zach had considered riding home and grabbing his archery gear before heading downtown. But in his heart of hearts he knew he wasn’t ready to confront the dragon, not until he figured out its weak spot.

“I’m still gathering information,” he confessed to Sam. “This whole dragon hunting thing is still pretty new to me.”

“Fair enough.” She shrugged, then asked, “Hey, did you know the police are looking for you? I mean, they don’t know it’s you they’re looking for, but they want to talk to a boy who was on the roof of the Warner Building yesterday when it caught on fire.”

“Yes, I know. They want to bring me in for questioning. Uncle Gunner says they suspect I may be the arsonist who’s starting all the fires.”

“What if you get arrested, Zach? What if you have to go to jail because of your dragon?”

Zach snapped his head toward her. “Sam, it’s not my dragon. I don’t have any control over it. Although that may be possible one day, if I work hard and develop my skills.”

He went on to tell her about Ogden Spear, the last dragon master in his family, and about what Uncle Gunner had said about Zach becoming the next dragon master.

“So, let me get this straight,” Sam said. “You’ll actually be able to command dragons?”

“Yeah, I guess so. And then it’ll be up to me to banish them to remote places, the way my ancestor did.”

“If you did that, Zach, it would probably make you the absolute coolest kid in school!”

They hung out for some time in front of Dunnigan’s, Zach scanning the sky every few seconds for any sign of the dragon. Finally, after a couple of hours, Sam said, “My mom will want me home for dinner soon. Don’t you have to go eat dinner?”

“I told my mom I’d be home late,” Zach said. “Told her I was working on a community service project. She’s at some after-hours work function anyway.”

“Community service project? Really, Zach?”

“I think saving Sunnyvale from a fire-breathing dragon qualifies as community service,” he argued.

Sam laughed. “I’ll call you after dinner. Text me if you see the dragon again.”

Zach nodded and watched as she hopped on her bicycle and pedaled away. Then, leaning back against the wall outside Dunnigan’s, he scanned the city skyline once again, murmuring under his breath, “C’mon, dragon, show yourself.”

It was nearing dusk when the dragon made its attack. Only Zach didn’t see the dragon because it didn’t attack any buildings in downtown Sunnyvale. Instead the creature showed up at a strip mall a couple miles from downtown. Zach found out about it when Sam called him on his cell.
