Chapter Fourteen

What is she doing?

The question of the hour because he didn’t know. The bug Dex had planted in Adi’s room showed only one thing. A piece of paper with a message, for him.

Sleeping naked, thinking of you.

Lucky. At least she slept. He’d spent the night lying awake and horny, reliving the sex in the alley over and over.

More than just sex, it was an epic, possibly life-changing moment because he couldn’t deny it anymore.

He really, really, really, fucking really liked Adi.

Fuck.

And he liked her even though she wasn’t one hundred percent human.

She felt human enough last night.

But that didn’t mean shit. What if she turned into a monster? Would he be able to look past a monster to the woman underneath?

He wasn’t sure of that reply, which, in turn, bothered him. How could he be with someone that might revolt him later?

What if she was a monster?

What if…

The one thing he did know was that he craved her. Now. Again. Possibly even worse than before. Once just wasn’t enough, and he doubted twice would be either.

I need to talk to her. See her. Something. And yet, the sign over her video feed didn’t move, and her door remained shut when he exited his room. He almost knocked. Stood before her door with his fist raised, but that smacked of desperation. Besides, she was probably already downstairs sitting in his car with some of that awful coffee she liked to overpay for. He almost leaped down the stairs in his haste to go see, only to find his step slowing to a stop as he noted the seats in his car were bare.

It took him by surprise enough that he sat behind the wheel, engine running, waiting to see if she’d appear. When she didn’t, he couldn’t delay any longer, not with his phone blowing up with messages from folks at LI.

Something big was happening at Lytropia Institute, and if he didn’t want to look suspicious, he needed to check it out.

The first difference he noted upon pulling into the gated facility was that the parking lot was only half-full, the usual rank and file of vehicles pitted with empty spots. He grabbed his work briefcase with his laptop, covered in geeky stickers such as I <3 to byte. His true device he kept tucked under a carpet in his car in a specially made, recessed chamber. Every day, he found a furtive place when he left his room for the night to make the swap.

Upon entering the building, he could hear the angry buzz. Employees were pissed and not afraid to show it. They had a right to be annoyed. Something odd had happened that went beyond the computers getting pulled yesterday.

There was equipment missing. Lots of it. Big, expensive machines that had worked fine the day before. Add to that there were no updates. No one could locate a memo, and it seemed there was no upper management to harass for answers. None of the suits had come into work.
