Chapter 9
This time I knew what was happening when Captain Hale woke everyone up at four in the morning with the same shrill alarm heâd used before. I bolted upright in my bed, threw the covers off, and jumped to my feet in a matter of seconds. It didnât mean that I wasnât tired as hell, because I sure was, but I knew Captain Hale would only make our lives harder if we werenât ready to go as soon as he gave the signal.
Across the room, Caleb stirred and slowly sat up. He yawned, rubbed his eyes, and glanced at me with a sour expression that made me chuckle.
âThat Hale again?â he asked around a jaw-breaking yawn.
âI think so,â I replied. âI donât know anyone else who enjoys torturing us this early in the morning.â
âTrue,â Caleb sighed.
I headed to the door and poked my head out in time to see the other cadets doing the same. And indeed, our supervisor stood at the end of the hallway with a megaphone and a maniacal grin on his face. Clearly, he enjoyed making us suffer, the bastard.
âSaddle up, Cadets, youâre going flying,â Hale announced in a booming voice. âFive minutes in the courtyard.â
He pressed one of the megaphoneâs buttons, and another shrill sound echoed through the hallway. Most of the cadets who were poking their heads out covered their ears and grumbled before they disappeared back inside their dorm rooms.
I did the same thing and began changing into my flying gear while Caleb stifled another yawn and slowly got up.
âHow often do you think theyâll make us wake up at the crack of dawn?â he muttered in a dismayed voice.
âProbably a lot,â I shrugged. âAt least we got more than five hours of sleep.â
âHow do you always manage to see the positive in every situation?â Caleb asked.
âItâs a gift,â I grinned. âCome on, bro, hurry up.â
Caleb grunted in answer, but he did put on his flying gear in under two minutes. Then with his goggles in one hand, he nodded at me, and we both left our dorm room. We joined the other cadets in the inner courtyard and piled inside the military van. Captain Hale drove us to the flying field where Lieutenant Sunderland was waiting for us.
âGood morning, Cadets, get your dragons ready, and weâll set off,â Sunderland ordered. âYou have ten minutes.â
By now, ten minutes to get Storm ready to fly was enough for me to get everything done. I couldâve done the straps and buckled the saddle with my eyes closed, and it still wouldâve been one hundred percent secure. I knew what I was doing, and all that was left for me to do was master every maneuver and aerial strategy that we were taught. We had yet to practice squadron maneuvers where all twelve of us would fly together in formation, but I assumed that would come once the Wingleader Trials had been held and our squadron leader was chosen.
Once our dragons were saddled, Sunderland ordered us to get in formation before we set off for the military compound in the Grand Canyon.
