Chapter 9

In the grand scheme of things, three days was nothing. And yet, that’s all I had with my family before I had to head back to the academy to prep for my summer assignment. It’d been amazing to see my parents and younger sister since I hadn’t seen them since August of last year. But while I wish I’d had more time with them, I was also getting restless. I wanted to see and ride Storm again, and I couldn’t wait to be with Brie for the rest of the summer. So I made the most of the time that I did have with my family, and when it was finally time to leave, I almost couldn’t get out fast enough.

The first thing that struck me once I was back on the campus was how quiet it was. Without the cadets and faculty, the campus suddenly looked too large for the handful of squires and instructors who were still there. On the bright side, I was able to find Brie without any trouble. The gorgeous redhead was waiting for me in the common room we’d shared all year. In just a few weeks, it’d belong to the next generation of cadets, while my squadron would be moved somewhere else.

“Hey,” I said softly as I pushed the door open.

Brie was lounging on one of the couches with her ankles crossed and her feet propped up on the couch’s armrest. She had an open beer bottle in one hand, and she’d turned the TV on, though she wasn’t actively watching the screen.

“Hey back,” she grinned when she looked up. “It feels weird to be back here, doesn’t it? Especially with no one else around.”

“It sure does,” I agreed and went to join her on the couch. “It’s so quiet, it’s unnatural.”

“It might sound strange and completely fucked up, but I kinda miss Pierce’s obnoxiousness.”

“You, too?” I gasped and laughed. “‘Miss’ isn’t exactly the word I’d use, but it’s true that the room feels way too quiet without him moaning about something.”

“I’ve definitely missed you, though,” she added with a sly grin.

“So have I,” I replied. “Did you have a good time?”

“As good as it gets.” She shrugged. “My dad kept asking me questions about where the academy was sending me. He didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t tell him, but he got over it.”

“Same with my mom,” I sighed. “She nagged me over and over again, and she cried when I left.”

“That’s…” Brie trailed off with a thoughtful expression on her face. “Surprisingly sweet.”

“She’s not too bad,” I teased. “Do you have everything ready?”

“Heck, yes!” Brie exclaimed and jumped up. “Let’s go.”

We left the common room with our suitcases and rucksacks together and headed to the flying field. A massive dragon carrier was already on the runway when we arrived, and I could see both squires and soldiers busy nearby. It looked like the squires were carrying our tack and other supplies inside the aircraft, but no one was trying to load Storm and Flame yet.
