Epilogue
NORMALLY, when Haddon found himself in the uncharted territory of a new library, there was no resisting the inborn instinct to search out new books and new knowledge.
But the world was no longer normal. And Haddon could no longer afford to lose himself in history and literature and science. Could no longer play at being a scholar and a hermit. His family and his kingdom needed him to be a warrior.
So, despite the itch to skim through the multitude of unfamiliar tomes on Conrey's shelves, Haddon kept his hands to himself.
Instead, he leaned against the window, and half-listened to the conversation.
"And the fairy wand?" Lady Everly was asking, watching the treasure hunters closely. "Korgeto seems certain you uncovered something at the ruins of the monastery."
Haddon wanted to snort at the ridiculous question. There was no historical proof the fey ever existed. Instead, he kept his mouth sealed but his eyes and ears open.
"We didn't find anything," Rory answered with exasperation.
"We barely started digging," Jack added from his seat next Kyn. "Korgeto's men were nipping at our heels before we'd been there more than a couple of days."
"A fairy wand? Really?" Zane asked incredulously. Or perhaps it was Wyatt. Haddon still couldn't quite tell the twins apart. "I thought they were just old huntersâ tales."
Conrey and Everly exchanged a look that made Haddon stand up straighter. Whatever Haddon believed about fairy stories, it seemed some in Glicien took Korgeto's claims seriously. And, considering the rumors of strange magic in the kingdom, perhaps Haddon shouldn't dismiss it out of hand.
If the wand was real, if even half the tales were true... They needed to make sure Velia never got her hands on it.
Haddon bit back a growl and glanced toward Jelverck. The man waited, silent and observing, in a shadowed corner.
But his expression gave nothing away. Just the same unreadable, unshakable calm he always wore. The same look he had when he held a knife to Kyn's throat. And when he stood by and watched the Grey Enchantress force Haddon and his brothers to betray everything they held dear.
Kyn believed Jelverck deserved a second chance. And now, even cynical Ash accepted that the huntsman was on their side.
Haddon, however, would never trust the man. Would never let his guard down around him.
Jelverck had betrayed their family one too many times.
The library door swung open, bringing a halt to his dark thoughts as well as the conversation around him.
Bea and Ash stood awkwardly in the door for a silent moment before shuffling into the room together.
It took only a glance to realize something had changed between them. Haddon had spent the last few days watching his brother silently pine while Bea went out of her way to avoid him.
Now, however, there was no distance between them at all. Ash cradled her hand gently in his and Bea's gaze darted continuously back to Ash, even as she greeted the room and apologized for being late.
Conrey took it all in with a gentle smirk.
Bea flushed a little but didn't give her father the chance comment.
