Table abbreviations:

Rf: respiratory frequency in one minute (number of inhalations or exhalations)

% CO2: % CO2 in alveoli of the lungs (*or arterial blood if there is no ventilation-perfusion mismatch)

AP: automatic pause or natural delay in breathing after exhalation (*during unconscious breathing)

CP: control pause, or breath holding time after medium exhalation and until first distress.

Dr. Buteyko: Therefore, during deep breathing, carbon dioxide levels become lower, oxygen levels are lower, breath holding time is shorter, breathing frequency is higher, and the automatic pause is absent. Here (*when we move up the table) respiration is increasingly less, here (*when we move down the table) increasingly more. In the first direction (*upper rows), that is where the yogis are situated, and here is where most of the severe patients are (*lower rows)—condemned people.
