TWENTY-EIGHT

It was late and Marisa needed a good night’s sleep, but she’d been pleasantly surprised when Spaulding had texted her a file with the updated suspect list.

Five names.

None of the men they’d looked at so far.

Xavier helped her find the five files and rework the walls, focusing on the updated list.

“Don’t get rid of the other files. Not yet,” Marisa said. Just in case something was wrong or their main culprit was in the larger group, either because Spaulding or Winters had not been truthful with their part of the investigation, or because one of the five men weren’t actually the killer.

They could leave nothing to chance. If all went well, though, having only five subjects to work meant less work and hopefully closer to the end of this trip.

“If we can find the killer, we need to pass it along to Spaulding,” Marisa said. “Let him make the arrest, if possible.”

“But not Winters. I don’t like her.” Xavier put the fifth and final photo on the wall and stepped back. “Now we do some research.”

Marisa had to agree. The woman was petty and she’d take every chance to screw them up and screw them over. It was best to steer clear of her for the moment.

“Let’s see where these five live in relation to one another and start to formulate a plan for today,” Marisa said. “I called Kornberg but he’s not sure he can get us more help yet. We might need to split up and follow a couple of them but stay in contact.”

“We’ll need a second rental car.” Xavier had copies of the five men in front of him now.

“I already took care of it. We’ll swing by and pick it up in the next half an hour. Now… let’s figure out who these five men are.” Marisa was happy to see the five men weren’t that far from one another. Maybe within fifty miles, in fact. They could easily put eyes on all of them, even with traffic.

She hoped this coming day was going to be more productive than the ones they’d had so far.

“I’m looking forward to not only being home but also back in my comfortable role as a repo man,” Xavier said. “A life I’ve known for a few years, and one I excel at. This FBI stuff is beyond me, to be honest. I’m not even sure I like it. Sure, the money is good, but as I get older I realize money isn’t the only thing I need to go after. You know?”

“I do.” Marisa smiled. Since working with James Gaffney, she had more than enough money to live comfortably the rest of her life. More money than she knew what to do with, in fact. She might be young but she was wise with investments, and she owned a lot of real estate all over the country and in some parts of the world. “I’m not doing this for the paycheck, I’m doing it because I think it helps. I think we’re doing a good thing here.
