Chapter Four
With the first spark of awareness, pain lances through her body. But it disappears almost as quickly.
Her eyelids crack open, and her immediate expectation is to see things that may make her shudder. But none of these nightmares fills her vision. It is darkness that surrounds Jasmine as she finally regains consciousness, obscuring much from her sight, and even more from her memory. Something large is inches away from her face, even dominating her periphery. A smooth, solid surface, with a small, abysmal gap just underneath it. She turns her head, and with her line of sight less broken, finds that same pitch-black palette coloring all of her surroundings. She distinguishes only blurry silhouettes of the different shapes that tower over her.
The fact that she can even discern the forms at all tells her that it isnât at all that dark. Sure enough, her eyes slowly adjust to the faint light shining in through the windows from the rear. Even part of her body seems to come into focus. And strangely, as light falls on each one of her limbs, it is as though she regains feeling there as well.
Her palms are bitten by the cool kiss of the floor as she pushes her torso from the ground. At first, even a motion as simple as this proves to be too fast. Her head starts throbbing, the dull ache stealing the vision she worked so hard to regain in the course of the last minute. However, the stabbing pangs are nothing but a residual memory compared to what sheâd gone through before. Cramps even find their way to her limbs.
She leans on her elbow, pivoting to look behind herself. There, through the window, the high-rise buildings outside are the only clear marker of where she is.
Yet, she has a vague recollection of how she landed here.
Slumping back for a moment, she wearily lifts her head. Her eyes settle on a clock hanging on one of the walls close by. Itâs just past 3:00 a.m.
What have I been doing all this time?
As if in answer, her memory returns. It unfolds like a lagging replay that gets worse the longer she allows the mental footage to roll through her head.
The street⦠the chase⦠the capture⦠the conversation⦠the caveat⦠her chaperones. And then, in the seclusion of their secrecy and distance placed between them and the city⦠the violation of her body.
Too many details assail her mind all at once. She is not ready for any of it. She lays her head down on her outstretched arm, focusing on pushing back the flow of memory instead of trying to recall it. The images are too intense for her to relive. Nothing can be misunderstood among them. They are all too vivid, and feel all too real. And all too wrong. She isnât in the right headspace to face that trial of mind just yet. She needs to become aware of the immediacies of her situation, before she can explore what may have caused it.
