Chapter Seven

“Oh, dear Lord. How long can this last?” Sydney was sitting on the floor of the bathroom again. Exactly where she’d been sitting every morning for the past two weeks.

Exhausted from her latest bout of morning sickness, she leaned her head back against the cool porcelain tub. “How about giving your mommy a break for a day, hmm?” She pressed her hand against her belly.

Aside from the way her waist had gotten a little thicker, her belly was still flat. She knew, because she studied it each and every day. Wondering if she started looking pregnant whether or not she’d start feeling like she knew what she was doing.

She waited a few more minutes before cautiously moving. Mercifully, her stomach stayed put as she stood and turned on the shower. While the water heated, she brushed her teeth and washed her face.

She didn’t have to keep the door shut to hoard the steam like a miser. Not since Derek had replaced the furnace last weekend. Now, if she wanted to burn a fire in the fireplace, she could do it simply because she enjoyed the coziness of it. Not because she needed it for the heat.

She pulled off the flannel nightgown that she’d bought at Shop-World when she’d finally gotten there, and left it in a heap on the rug. She still couldn’t help laughing a little over the purchase. The gown was ridiculously soft but it was pink with bright green polka dots. Not exactly her usual style. She was pretty sure she hadn’t worn flannel since she was an infant, and she was certain she’d never been in bright green dots.

She stepped into the shower and pulled the curtain, turning her head into the water.

She wondered what Derek would think if he knew that while she’d been perusing the store, she’d also bought herself white cotton panties that came three to a pack and cost the whopping sum of ten dollars.

Not that she had any intention of sharing that piece of information. It was bad enough that she’d taken as much pleasure in his thunderstruck expression as she had when the subject of her panties had come up between them that day at the shop.

She let the water wash over her face, but it did little to drown out that particularly sweet memory. A memory that she also knew she was holding on to longer than was wise.

What good did it do to be attracted to Derek when nothing would ever come of it?

Could ever come of it?

Just because he’d made an incredible nuisance out of himself—a useful nuisance, given the furnace and the wood and the car, since he’d fixed that, too—didn’t mean that he liked her any more than he ever had. He just felt some misplaced sense of responsibility for her. Because she was Jake’s sister. And because she was pregnant.

That much was perfectly clear to her.

In the scheme of things, her pregnancy took precedence over her.
