He ignored the shards and dropped a kiss on her lips, also ignoring the hissing sound that was low enough for only his ears.

"You all can be the first to congratulate us since this lovely lady is going to be my wife." He didn't have to turn her around in his arms; she spun like a top to face him and her "are you insane?" comment was drowned out by the even louder "aw-wh-h" that filled the air at his announcement.

He kissed her lips, drowning out any other comments she cared to add, while applause broke out all around them. "You owe me," he muttered in her ear when she pulled her mouth away from his.

Between their bodies, her fingernails dug into his chest. "Tell them the truth," she said through a clenched smile.

"Dude," Ted said from behind his camera. "Guess there's more going on than even I thought." He finally turned his camera away from them and panned over the crowd, who was acting as if Elvis had just reappeared in the flesh.

Janet and Paul began pulling women forward, getting live comments and Leandra pinched the inside of his arm. "Inside," she said, looking all loverlike.

He was going to be feeling the bruise on his arm for a while, he figured.

He twined his fingers through hers, keeping a good grip just in case she decided to bolt and ruin his charade. "Wither thou goest," he muttered, smiling right back at her. "You all don't mind excusing us for a while, do you?" he asked the crowd at large, and earned them another round of comments and laughter.

The moment they were inside the clinic, Leandra yanked her hand away from Evan's. "Are you mad?" She wanted to scream, but managed by some grace of God to keep her tone low. "You can't go around telling people we're getting married!"

"Why not?" Evan leaned back against the reception desk and crossed his arms over his chest. He looked so satisfied with himself that she wanted to kick him.

Or kiss him.

Both choices were completely unacceptable, even though she'd already done the latter. More than once.

And wanted to, again.

Despite his apparent loss of senses.

"Why not?" She propped her hands on her hips. "Why not?" Her voice rose and she swallowed hard, taking another deep breath. "Ted was filming all that, you know. Those women are going to expect to see themselves... and us... on the next episode."

"That's the plan."

"The plan. There is no plan! And that... that... mockery out there will be edited out. You can count on it."

"You're not going to edit it out," Evan said.

Shock was beginning to gurgle through her nerve endings, overriding the stunned paralysis that had seemed to plague her from the moment he'd put his arms around her. "Of course we are!"

"No, you're not." He grabbed her shoulders and dropped his head close to hers. "Your uncle had a point. If I had a wife, those women out there wouldn't be so damn anxious to throw themselves on my doorstep.
