I flipped through a magazine on the couch in the shed. “Do you only love these kneesocks?” I asked, holding the picture out for Trin to see. I had decided to be the mature one and overlook how rude she’d been.

“Cute,” Trin agreed.

My phone rang. I grabbed it and said, “Hello?”

A voice said, “Yes, this is Marlo Mansfield. I’m trying to reach Harmony Gomez of the Chosen Girls.”

I practically jumped off the couch and walked to the far side of the shed. “This is she,” I said. “How can I help you?”

“Actually, this is going to sound a little crazy, Harmony, but I’d like to know if the Chosen Girls could open for the Fall Fling tomorrow.”

I looked around. This couldn’t be real. Maybe I hadn’t woken up.

“Harmony?” she asked.

“Sí. I mean yes, I’m here.” I stepped out of the shed and closed the door behind me. “Do you mean the Fall Fling? At the Hopetown City Park?”

She laughed and then started explaining. “We generally book our bands up to a year in advance. We’ve had No Clemency lined up since last August. Then yesterday their manager called and said the band is splitting up. I saw your flyer at the chamber of commerce.”

I started to smile. This was real. My dream was coming true!

“ A couple people on the committee have seen your video, and they love it,” she continued. “They thought your band would add a fresh touch to the event and draw in the teen crowd.”

I finally kicked into manager mode. “Sí! They’re right! The Chosen Girls are exactly what you need!”

“But is the band available on such short notice?” she asked.

“Good point,” I said. “Let me look through the calendar of appearances.” I reached up and rustled a palm branch for a sound effect.

“It appears to be your lucky day, Marlo Mansfield!” I declared. “The band has tomorrow open.”

“Terrific!” she said. I could hear the relief in her voice. “Now, this won’t be a full concert. We just need three or four songs to get things rolling. Because of that, we traditionally pay only three hundred dollars.”

I wanted to scream, “Cool frijoles!” but I just said, “Three hundred will be fine. What time should we be there?”

“Why don’t you set up by three tomorrow afternoon? We’ll have a complete sound system there, so don’t worry about that. The Fling begins at four.”

“The band will be there, Ms. Mansfield. We look forward to doing business with you.”

After I hung up, I flung open the door to the shed and yelled, “The Chosen Girls rock Hopetown!” I ran in and grabbed Trin and then Mello in a big hug.

I jumped up and down and clapped and whooped. I danced around in circles. When I stopped, I looked at Trin and Mello.

They sat staring at me.

I realized they didn’t know the exciting news. Then I realized they might not consider it exciting.

Oh, well.

“Amigas, that was a lady from the Fall Fling committee.” I took a deep breath and let it out.
