The night air was cooler than usual, and a light rain started to fall. The tips of my fingers were starting to numb, and my nose was cool to the touch. I had already walked three miles or so before I saw a pair of bright lights shining in the distance. I acted like I didn’t notice until the car slowly creeped up behind me.

I stopped and craned my neck toward the driver. He turned the cabin light on, and I got a good look at the bald, twentysomething man behind the wheel. His biceps bulged through his suit jacket, and the veins on the side of his head were pronounced.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

He turned and asked, “You looking for a ride?”

Nodding, I stepped into the back of the tinted SUV. I expected someone to be waiting in the vehicle, but it was just me and the driver. I leaned forward and asked, “How far do we have to go?”

He tilted his head in my direction as he drove off. “Twenty minutes,” he said flatly.

I tried to be heard over the light jazz playing in the background and the hard rain now falling on the roof. “You sound like you’re from the States. What part?”

I sat there awkwardly awaiting his response, but he didn’t give one. I tried again. “Where you from?”

He looked into the rearview mirror at me. “Sir, I was told not to converse. I apologize, but we’ll be there shortly.”

With a curt nod, I sat back, pulled my phone out, and texted my wife.
