“So, are you two going to be playing the good cop with me as the bad cop?” Kemp asked from the back seat of Leah and Jonesy’s service vehicle.

Everything about the setup was a contradiction, and Leah had been half-tempted to shove Kemp in the boot so that none of the other officers would see him.

“You aren’t doing anything,” Leah explained. “We’re going to visit Brandt, find out what he knows, and report back to you.”

Kemp looked back at her blankly. “Leah, I say this with no end of respect, but that is a crappy plan.” Jonesy whipped around in his seat, preparing to come to Leah’s defence when Kemp made his point. “Do you really think you’re the first detectives who will have turned up on his doorstep asking questions you’re not supposed to? He’ll just send you merrily on your way with whatever bullshit he can pull from his arse.”

Leah hadn’t considered that. If anyone had successfully questioned Brandt and extracted information from him, he wouldn’t be enjoying such a comfortable retirement.

“So, what are you proposing?” Jonesy asked. “Waterboarding the man?”

Kemp shrugged and neither of them could tell whether that was a joke or not.

“I know that this is personal for you, Simon,” Leah reasoned. “We’re already taking a huge risk as it is involving you. If this goes well, we’re bringing in an old killer. But if it goes wrong, then both of us could be looking at a tribunal. So, you can understand why we would weigh our options.”

Kemp bowed his head. “I’m sorry. I don’t want you hitching yourself too closely to my falling star.”

Trying to be diplomatic, Jonesy implored, “This isn’t just about you. We need to do this by the book.”

“You know, I used to think like that too, Sam,” Kemp noted, his voice full of melancholy. “But now I think that if I’d gone my own way sooner, then Josie would still be alive.”

Neither Leah nor Jonesy knew what to say to that. They were both going a long way to understanding what had made Kemp the way he was.
