Chapter 10

I WAS SURPRISED TO find Eloise waiting for me at the A-frame when I pulled Jake’s truck into the parking space.

“Did you need me for something?” I asked her as I got out. “Forgive me. I smell like donuts from earlier.”

“How many did you eat?” she asked me quizzically.

“I only had part of the first one to test it. I just assumed you heard that I worked at the donut shop this morning,” I admitted.

“Why on earth would I know that?”

This was getting out of hand. “Sissy knew all about it, so for some reason I assumed that you did, too. It doesn’t matter.”

Eloise looked at me carefully. “Now you’ve got me curious. How did Harley know how to find you, let alone believe that you’d be willing to help him in his folly?”

“What’s the matter? Don’t you like donuts, Eloise?” I asked, feeling the slightest bit miffed by her reaction.

“Me? I adore them,” she admitted. “I just didn’t know you were here to work.”

She had a point. “I wasn’t planning on it, but I visited the shop this morning and saw that Harley could use some help, so I decided to pitch in.”

“How very sweet of you. I should explain myself. The reason I call his shop his folly was because he never should have retired as our police chief.”

“He told me that he had a heart attack,” I said. Why was I having to explain that to her? Surely she knew about it, being local and all.

“True, but it was a very mild one,” Eloise countered. “When it happened, he decided that he’d had enough, so he married that girl and then bought the shop without consulting anyone, including her. If the shop doesn’t kill him, I believe that she surely will.”

“Your family is really fond of Harley, aren’t they?” I asked her.

Eloise studied me for a few seconds before she answered. “You know about that, don’t you?”

“Know what?” I asked as innocently as I could manage.

“My daughter has had a crush on that man for years, along with one other local fellow,” Eloise said.

“You’re talking about Gregory Kline,” I said.

That really caught her off guard. “I’ve known about both of them for years, but I didn’t realize that anyone else did. You must be quite observant for a donut maker.”

I wasn’t sure if that was meant to be a compliment or not, but I decided that I was going to take it as one. “All I can say is that I listen,” I admitted.

“You do a great deal more than that. You watch too, don’t you?”

“There’s nothing wrong with paying attention,” I amended. “Sissy confessed her crush on Gregory to me a little bit ago, but the truth is that I’m not even certain that Sissy knows she has a crush on the former police chief.”

“No, perhaps she doesn’t at that,” Eloise admitted.

“Is she the only Sandler woman who feels that way?” I asked.

I couldn’t believe it, but Eloise actually blushed a bit. “Now you’re just talking nonsense,” she said after taking a moment to collect herself.
