Some children get bad reactions from things like shellfish, soy, nuts, dust, pet dander, and pollen. Symptoms can range from itchiness and rashes to vomiting and life-threatening shock.

What to Do

Prevent potential allergic reactions by asking parents what the triggers are, and keeping the kids away from anything that could set off an attack.

Get the 411 on any medication. Parents may ask you to give the child over-the-counter or prescription allergy medicine. Kids with more serious allergies may even need regular shots. If there is a risk of a child going into anaphylactic shock (see below), his parents should outline the emergency protocol. If you're panicked, call 911 immediately and follow the instructions.

Get certified to inject a shot or administer CPR. If you are not qualified, don't try it. You might do more harm than good.
