Chapter 31
Hart met Rickman in his office an hour later.
âMrs Shepherd has asked for a brief,â Hart said.
Rickman leaned against the wall, his long legs crossed at the ankles, his arms folded. He looked exhausted. âDid you get anything out of her?â
Hart shook her head. âThe womanâs got nerves of steel.â In an interview, Hart would use her good looks, lulling macho male suspects into underestimating her, coaxing the susceptible into her confidence. Mrs Shepherd had not been susceptible.
âWhen I accused her of being a baby broker, she said, âThis isnât America, young woman.â That was it â I must have asked the question in twenty different ways. Not even a âNo commentâ.â
âI listened to the tape while I was waiting for you,â Rickman said. âIf itâs any consolation, I think theyâve been coached.â
Hart exhaled in a rush. âIf theyâve got lawyers and police on their client list, weâre sunk.â She caught his glance of approval that she had made the connection. It was almost enough to make up for her fruitless questioning of Mrs Shepherd. Almost.
âSo,â she said. âNo joy from Ed, either.â
Rickman shifted positions. A finger went to the scar over his right eyebrow as he thought. âItâs debatable. He admitted that Mark telephoned him the day he died. He claims Mark offered him money.â
âHe offered them money? That could only meanââ
âMark took the cash that went missing from Operation Snowplough.â
She thought about it for a moment. âBut no confession?â
Rickman titled his head. âA few suggestive responses, but certainly no confession. And heâs insisting that Hilary isnât involved.â
Hart shot him an incredulous look.
âI know.â He fell silent. When he spoke again, it was as if in response to some internal debate. âWe need access to the childrenâs home, but all we have right now is an informantâs uncorroborated word that these two deal in babies.â
âWhich wonât get us a warrant.â Hart recalled Markâs mobile phone records, the six calls to the Shepherdsâ landline. âWe can prove that he lied about speaking to Mark the night he was murdered.â
âThatâll help,â Rickman said. âAnd if I can persuade the magistrate to listen to the interview tapes, I might be able to swing it for us to get that search warrant.â
âCanât we get it on the basis of obstruction? Perverting the course of justice?â Hart asked, her frustration evident. âShepherd took those phone calls from Davis and did nothing.â
âIf I have to go with that, I will,â Rickman said. âBut it would limit the scope of the search.â He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it tousled. âDâyou think you could buy us some time? Delay Mrs Shepherdâs solicitor?â
âOh,â Hart said with sly satisfaction, âI can do inefficient.â
âI very much doubt that,â Rickman said with a smile, and she again felt the motivating warmth of his approbation. âBut if you can manage slow, that will be fine.â
* * *
Rickman took the recordings to the magistratesâ court himself. The rest of the team worked on existing leads, interviewing Black Woodâs ex-residents, following up calls to the hotline.
