TWENTY-SEVEN
TALLY
Clutching my mug of tea, I watched as the expression on Bernieâs face transformed from sympathy to horror, and then to restraint. It had been almost a week since I had showed up on her doorstep, looking so messed up. Bernie hadnât asked any questions at first. She told me she knew I would tell her what had happened to me when I was ready. I didnât know much about Bernieâs past, or what had turned her into the saintlike human being she had become, but I knew sheâd been in foster care, so she understood what Iâd been through. But telling her the truth about how and why I ended up at her house, begging for her help, was a test to see how much I could trust her.
And I had done it. I had told her everything, and she hadnât said a word in response.
Fear crept through my body as I wondered if she would turn me in. I feared that I had gone too far, that I was so rotten I couldnât be brought back to being a normal, decent human being. Had I ever been normal? Or had I always been broken? I wanted to be whole again, like I was when I was little, but I wondered if that was even remotely possible.
And now, the one person in this unfriendly world that I trusted completely saw me differently.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Bernie placed her hands on the table and said, âWhat do you plan to do?â
âI donât know. I just drove here thinking you were the only person I could trust. I donât have a plan beyond that.â
âYouâve been through so much in your young life. It breaks my heart,â she said softly.
âDo you think Iâm a terrible person?â I asked, my voice trembling.
I wondered if I was. Maybe I had finally turned into one of those horrible kids I had met who only looked out for themselves and did whatever it took to survive.
Shaking her head, she said, âNo, honey, of course not. I just⦠I think maybe we should go to the police.â
My heart sank. âI canât. I canât go to the police.â
âI think you need to. You are a survivor and I think you can survive this too. Itâs the right thing to do.â
I thought she understood. Why would she think I should go to the police? Had I made a terrible mistake coming here? She had fed me, clothed me, and was trying to heal my physical wounds. To suggest going to the police didnât make sense to me. âThey wonât find me. I think I can just hide out, let it blow over,â I said, though even as the words left my mouth, I knew how absurd they sounded. Murder doesnât just blow over.
Bernie raised her eyebrows. âI think you need to go to the police. Even if you donât, they will find you eventually.â
As she continued to speak, I watched her lips move, and for the third time in my life, I felt my world crumbling into rubble.
