Chapter 16
I got dressed in a hurry, barely remembered to grab the turtle necklace and put it on, and headed out the door, careful to make sure my gloves were on before I stepped out into the hall. Itâs a good thing I did, because Donna was peeking out the door, and I waved at her with my left hand, trying to fix the impression in her mind that it was perfectly normal. The conjoined fingers still bend, so with the gloves on they appear perfectly normal when Iâm waving with them.
It was terribly cold outside, and I missed the heated seats from my Kia, but the Camry fired right up. I put it in gear and drove away, carefully watching everything around to be sure I wasnât being followed. I had no idea where the man I had spoken to was based, so there was no way to know whether he could have gotten to me so quickly, but I wasnât taking chances. When I had gone more than a mile without seeing anything that could be a tail, I took out my own phone and called Alicia.
âItâs Cassie,â I said. âI did it, I did it. I talked to him.â I caught myself just before telling her how Alfie had rigged the computer to make sure I would get him. Something told me she might not approve of doing such things without a warrant, but I wasnât going to waste a lot of time trying to do everything by the book.
âYouâre sure itâs the same person?â Alicia asked.
âAbsolutely certain,â I said. âIt was the same voice I heard on the recording with Wanda and the others. No doubt about it, and get this: he seemed extremely interested in me. Kept talking about how it was a pity we couldnât meet, because we might be perfect for each other. Then he told me how it would be against the rules for me to give him my last name or any information that could lead him to me, so I acted like a smart-alec and gave him the last name Iâm using and the address of the apartment. I figure heâll be watching me by morning, so Dex and I are going to have to stay in character from here on out.â
âCassie, youâve got to be careful. If he knows how to get to you, he might not wait the way heâs done in the past. We need to get surveillance on you, right now.â
âNo,â I said. âI have a tracking device, something a friend of mine put together. Dex has a special cell phone that can track it by GPS, through cell towers. If anything happens, all I have to do is squeeze this thingâitâs the ugliest turtle you ever saw, hanging on a chain around my neckâand it will set off an alarm on that phone so Dex will know to start tracking me. Heâll call Niles as soon as it goes off, so you guys can get in on it.
