We returned to Kansas City just as we’d come—you asleep most of the way, me driving and thinking about things. Anytime I went home to Arkansas, I returned sad and pensive. I loved that place. What it did for me, how it made me the man I am. Well, the man I was. That land, that precious black soil, transformed my sweat into an inheritance I was proud of.

You were my boy, and you had trod where I had trod. You had walked the same earth as Wilson and Chaney Swinton, and thrown rocks into the same river as Esau and me. You had been inducted into a lineage of strong black men because you were my son. There was no greater joy.
