Chapter 7

Bethany watched with a smile as Donald held the door open for Diane. Diane looked up at her father and smiled at him in thanks. She pushed a button on her wheelchair and moved through and into the restaurant: Westerns Laundry, in Highbury, a district in North London.

A man in a blue uniform turned around and smiled at Diane. “Hi,” he said. He had quite nice dimples and Diane seemed dazzled by the way he looked at her. “Table for…”

Diane licked her lips, seeming nervous. “Three,” she said, her volume hardly louder than a whisper. Even then, it was easy to tell that she slurred.

The host didn’t blink an eye. He just nodded and turned, gesturing for Diane, Donald, and Bethany to follow him. “Right this way.”

Bethany came up beside Diane and patted her on the shoulder. Diane looked up at her, giving her a brief and weak smile. “You’re doing great,” Bethany mouthed.

Diane perked up a little bit and kept going, following the cute, young host to a table in the back corner. The host held out his arm, gesturing to it. “If one of the chairs gets in your way, just shove it to the side and someone else will take it. Shall I explain the menu to you?”

Donald held up his hand and shook his head. “We’re savvy about that Internets thing. We’ve got it.”

The host looked amused. “Great. Your server will be along shortly.”

As soon as the host was gone, Diane groaned and put her hand to her forehead. “Da-a-ad,” she said, dragging the word out into a whine. “Do you have to act like such a dad?”

Donald lightly tapped his fist against Diane’s shoulder. “Yes, I do. I have to make up for all the time I didn’t.”

Diane groaned again, and laughed.

Bethany stood back, watching them, her heart full from seeing them interact. She’d seen it plenty of times by now, as it had been another two weeks, but it never failed to make her happy.

She and Donald sat down, and Diane positioned herself at the end of the table after backing up a few times to get the angle exactly right. She picked up the wrapped silverware roll and fiddled with it, plucking at the napkin and leaving little white shreds on the tabletop. Bethany watched her, and knew Donald was doing the same. And she knew they shared the same thought, both of them wishing they could do something to make her feel more at ease. It couldn’t be easy to emerge out into the world after so long spent in a cage, even a cage as large and luxurious as the London Mercy Hospital.

She had continued to make such fantastic progress in such a short time that Doctor Thompson said she could go outside for a few hours. There was still no sign of her cancer returning; while not unusual, as cancer could recur years after being removed, it didn’t fit the usual pattern of Diane’s recurring struggles. A cautious hope had blossomed as a result.
