Bishop sighed. “This isn’t going to get anywhere, but before we decide that Leea’s presence on the hydrofoil answers all questions, remember who died. It wasn’t Leea.”

“Hmmm…” nodded David.

“The beast did get Chalfin, but he was next to Leea,” Dian said. “And then it practically let us kill it with hand weapons. It wasn’t half the trouble the carnosaur was.”

“Whatever happened on Erigon is your baby,” Bishop said soberly. “None of the rest of us have the knowledge. But Leea is terrified of eggs she’s never seen, and the behavior of those beasts was unnatural by our standards. I don’t buy the twin-sun hypothesis. There must be some more rational explanation. You two ought to work on it.”

“We will,” David promised.

Bishop tapped the wall of the cubicle that held the eggs. Leea knows they’re here, and I’ll bet they know she’s here!”

“Then Leea could give us the answer to all this,” said David.

“Maybe,” Bishop said. “I wish she knew enough of our language to tell us what we should know! What we need is a neurosynthesizer.” He shrugged and walked away.

“Persistent devil, isn’t he?” David said to Dian as he watched Bishop’s retreating back.

“He’s worried.”

“There’s nothing to worry about,” David said.

Dian sighed. “You don’t believe that twin-sun nonsense you were telling Bishop, do you?”

“Of course not. No more than I believe that Leea can sense life in these eggs, or that dinosaurs put on a show for our benefit. You must remember, dear, that spacemen are all superstitious, that Bishop is hurt over Chalfin’s death, and that hyperspace is a strange place. And that’s the way it is with Bishop. He isn’t seeing reality.”

“Thank you David. You ease my mind,” Dian said. “I can’t help worrying.”

“Don’t,” David told her.
