My head felt like it was stuffed with cotton when I woke up. I brought my hand up to steady my groggy head, but something cold and metallic weighed my arm down. I tugged on the heavy iron chains clamped around my wrists. It was no use. The chains were attached to large bolts secured to the concrete wall. My ankles were similarly shackled.

Mindful of my bonds, I shifted until I was sitting upright against the wall. My entire body was sore and aching from being stuck in one position for so long. Despite being chained, my captor had placed me on a plush bed and covered me with a warm comforter.

"Good. You're up." The source of the deep male voice flipped on the lights as he entered the room. I tried to see what he looked like, but all I could do was squint as I was blinded by the sudden bright light.

He set down a tray with a bottle of water and a ham and cheese sandwich. I twisted the cap off the bottle and chugged the water down my parched throat.

With my eyes now adjusted to the light, I got a good look at him. It was the same vampire who chased me and then tried to drink my blood. My hand flew up to the side of my neck. To my astonishment and confusion, the skin there was smooth and unbroken.

The golden-haired vampire watched my movements with a bemused expression on his face.

"Why didn't you bite me?"

"I don't like to bite unconscious women. Some vampires are into that kind of thing, but I’m not."

What a strange vampire. Did he want a cookie and a pat on the head for having a twisted semblance of morality?

"I've got to say, that was some strange defense spell you pulled off. You're like the human version of a fainting goat."

I flushed as humiliation washed over me. Was that what happened? Once again, my attempt at casting a spell had failed. The cruel taunts Althea lobbed at me when we were children rang in my head. My sister was right, as always. I was a disappointment to the family. Descended from generations of powerful witches and I was more useless than a wannabe witch buying her first crystal.

Even when I was in an emergency situation, I couldn't cast a teleportation spell to save my life. Literally. Instead of zapping myself away from danger, I zapped myself unconscious into the arms of my enemy.

"Eat something before you faint again, girlie."

"Stop calling me that. My name is Lizzy."

The vampire's jaw twitched in annoyance. "I want you to eat, Lizzy." My name rolled across his tongue as if he was trying the word out for the first time. "You are not doing yourself or us any good when you look like a light wind could blow you over."

He was right. I was starving, but there was no way I was going to listen and do as an evil vampire commanded.

Under the harsh overhead light, his face looked like it was chiseled out of stone.
