Chapter 10

“Why the interest in coming back to the house?” Detective Bruno asked as we drove to Shelly Wishard’s home.

“I’d just like to take a look around, see if I notice anything strange, I guess.”

“I didn’t realize you two were close.”

“We weren’t.”

“Yet you still want to see if you find anything strange?”

“Sometimes an untrained eye finds things a trained eye can’t.”

He pushed out his bottom lip and nodded. “I can see how that’s possible.”

“Wait!” I pointed in front of us. “That’s the van!”

Bruno slowed as the white van passed. “Are you sure?”

I hesitated. “No, yes. I don’t know, but it’s a white van driving through Shelly’s neighborhood. You should follow it!”

He pulled to the side, then carefully did a U-turn and kept his distance from the van.

“Get closer so we can see the tag.”

“Hold on there, partner. We get too close and they’ll know we’re following them.”

“Good. That’s what we want, right?”

“No. We want to see what they’re up to, so we hang back and watch from a distance.”

The van slowed.

“Look! That house has a fenced-in yard. I bet they own a dog.”

He glanced at me. “You mean you don’t know every dog owner in town?”

“I’m working on it.”

He smiled.

A dog rushed toward the fence on the side of the house and barked. It wasn’t a pittie but a hound of some sort.

The van passed. It slowed at two more homes, and Bruno finally decided to get close enough to read the tag number before calling it into dispatch.

“Plates are registered to a 2007 green Honda Odyssey. Tag reported stolen two weeks ago,” dispatch responded.

Bruno called for backup while keeping a good distance between the van and his car.

I tightened the seatbelt as a wave of excitement and fear washed over me. “What happens next?”

A squad car appeared at the corner and turned in front of the van. Another one appeared at the next corner and turned behind the van. My pulse quickened. The back cruiser flipped on its lights and pulled the van over. The front cruiser slowed, backed up, and blocked it from driving forward. Bruno pulled over behind the cars and ordered me to stay put.

I didn’t take direction well, but this time, I promised I would. The last thing I needed was Hayden freaked out enough to move back in with me. She was a little too protective of me, but she’d make a great mom someday.

The police surrounded the vehicle, with three more squad cars arriving to help out. Two teenage boys climbed out of the van with their hands in the air. “No,” I said out loud. “Not kids. Please God, don’t let it be kids.”

After a lot of yelling—some admittedly by me and to a closed window—the kids were on the ground and handcuffed. It was fascinating to watch, especially since Justin was one of the officers involved. The officers gathered together as Justin spoke into the radio on his collar a few feet away. When he walked back to the group, each officer nodded.
