I took the fifth exit onto the timber road. The tarmac broke up into gravel and dirt. The high pines were hemming us in on the edges. I was slowing the car down. The road was shredded rough with moon rock craters from the freeze and thaw. We were a long walk from anyplace. If we had blown out a tire we would’ve found out just how lonely we were. I was the only one truly concerned about something like that. Most everybody else had turned totally rabid and strange. Whatever they’d taken inside of the mall it was serious. Dylan was chewing on dark threads of his own filthy hair, smudging his wet nostrils with the torn cuff on his sweater. It was good to drive. I was locked onto the big bad machine. I was competent and I was integral. Zachary had half his body hung out the rear passenger window. He had his hands gripping onto the roof and his head hinged back, screaming out into the trees. The tape had jammed after the tenth mile, black cellophane snagging on all the hidden mechanics. Cody John was trying to wind it back in with the soft tip of his littlest finger. I felt like everybody’s mother. I felt like a great star. The headlights were calming me down. They only gave me a part of something. I figured there was only so much I ought to see and know about and the rest of it didn’t even matter. The heavy orange chemical light was only showing me the dark trees, sometimes flashing back the quick flare coming off the eyes of some raccoon or possum hid in the low earth, lit up and glow-in-the-dark like uranium glass or the plastic stars stuck on your ceiling. I wasn’t making a whole lot of sense to myself anymore. Everything had me corrupted. My signal was getting cut apart and it wasn’t coming back together right. I didn’t know a whole lot about radios. I felt like a radio, then. I didn’t know the mountains all that well. I didn’t ever go hunting with my dad. I didn’t know how to shoot or go fishing. I hadn’t ever wanted to kill a fish. People thought about it like it wasn’t really killing and it didn’t matter. I wasn’t ever sure what it was about seeing something moving the way it was meant to move with its body strong and undamaged that made people want to hurt it and stop it from drawing in a breath. People thought about fish like they were nothing. I didn’t understand that at all. I figured we didn’t understand meat in the real way that it happened. I figured we thought that we ought to look different than other hurt things on the inside, but we didn’t. We were all organ and horror. We weren’t all that solid or strong. We weren’t all that brave.
