Sara agreed to drive to the shelter and pick up the scanner, on the condition that Kari waited until she got back to give Bryn the latest update.

“This is better than a soap opera,” Sara said as she grabbed her purse and car keys.

“Other than the fact that Suz might end up in jail,” Kari pointed out.

“Not going to happen,” Bryn said, her jaw set in a stubborn manner that boded ill for anyone who disagreed with her. “We’re not going to let it.”

“No, we’re not,” Kari said decisively. “That’s one of the reasons I want to go to Francine’s house. Not only do I want to help the sheriff look for Miriam’s dog, which, by the way, I doubt is actually there, but I also want to see if I can find any other clues as to why someone would want to kill the woman.”

“Hold that thought,” Sara said, lifting a hand in the air. “I’m going to get the chip scanner and I will be right back.”

She nodded in the direction of a little girl and her father, who were clearly entranced by a half-grown yellow kitten in the cage on one of the tables. The kitten had lost one eye to an infection when it was only a few weeks old, but it was still as adorable as could be.

“Go convince those folks that imperfect kitties make the best pets,” Sara commanded, much the way she had told multiple generations of English students to hand in their papers on time, or else. “I’ll be back in two shakes of a cat’s tail.”
