Radiological Contaminants

Radiological contaminants in drinking water include naturally occurring substances such as uranium and radon, as well as a wide range of radionuclides resulting from human activities, including mining, the operation of nuclear reactors, and the disposal of nuclear waste. The acute health effects of radiation—burns, vomiting, reduced white blood cell counts—occur at high exposures and are not caused by drinking water. Exposure to radiation at low doses over a long time, however, is linked to increased risks of cancer and genetic disorders. Drinking water contaminated with radionuclides causes internal exposure to radiation that can last for months or even years. The radiation dose resulting from ingestion depends on a number of biological and chemical factors. Health effects depend on the type of radiation and the tissues or organs that are exposed. The good news is that generally less than 10% of human exposure to radiation comes from drinking water. However, if your indoor air contains high levels of radon and you rely on well water, you should have your water tested for radon and install a treatment system if levels are high.
