The Peat Tunnels
‘When did King Allanite realise he’d made a mistake about his wife?’ the Doctor asked, as they made their way through the hot tunnels below the city.
‘As soon as she was locked up to be sacrificed to the bogs,’ Root replied.
‘Sacrificed to the bogs?’
‘Thrown in the bog and drowned,’ Mossy explained. ‘And before you ask, she wasn’t raised from the dead. Though I don’t know why – Xenotime would have enjoyed parading her around in front of everyone.’
‘Because she couldn’t, that’s why,’ the Doctor said, sure now that Xenotime had absolutely no power. That whatever had occurred in the bog had been a natural phenomenon, which she had cleverly disguised as her own doing. ‘Tell me, what is the importance of the shoes? Root, I overheard you tell Ash that they were a gift from the King to the Queen whilst she was captured.’
‘The King visited the Queen before she was taken away to be killed,’ Root explained. ‘I was there. Well, down here in the tunnels. I saw them together in her cell. Mossy sneaked him in to her. The King gave her the shoes. I didn’t hear what they had to say, I didn’t think it would be right to watch their final moment, but some believe he gave them to her for her afterlife. The bog people used to be buried with their clothes, sometimes wearing them, other times with their clothes folded beside them.’
‘Is that what they left for you?’ the Doctor asked Mossy, but was duly ignored. ‘I understand your theory, Root, but a pair of shoes? And diamond ones at that.’ The Doctor frowned. ‘Seems unlikely she’d need them in an afterlife. It must have been a message of some sort. They must have a significance.’
‘I agree,’ Mossy said. ‘There is something more to it.’
‘It’s my fault all of this has happened,’ Root said. ‘If I hadn’t given the shoes to Ash to wear tonight, Xenotime wouldn’t have seen them, then Ash and Prince Zircon would be married.’
‘Ash appreciated the gesture, Root,’ the Doctor said. ‘But whatever it is about these shoes that we don’t know, it has made Xenotime very angry. And afraid. And if she’s afraid then they are our weapon against her. So let’s find Ash first, and find out more about the shoes.’
Mossy led the way as they ventured further into the underground tunnels, protecting them from the other warriors who were searching, pretending the Doctor and Root were his captives. As a senior warrior in Xenotime’s army, they respected him and didn’t dare question him. The smoke began to thicken the further they went.
‘What is this place?’ The Doctor stopped, caught in a fit of uncontrollable coughing. The heat was so intense he had to lose a layer of clothing.
‘It’s the Tollund heating system,’ Mossy explained. ‘We dig the peat from the bogs and then we dry it for fuel, we also burn it to get bog iron. At least, Princess Ash and her people do. The
