Chapter Fourteen

Bandar was having a total blast.

He was swinging through the trees, scampering through the guards’ legs, making them shriek with anger. Bandar loved monkeying around, and living in Mumbai’s concrete jungle had made him quite a trapeze artist. He adored Pappu, his pagal master who had found him by the railway tracks, all flea ridden and half dead, tossed aside like a spoilt fruit. Pappu had nursed him back to health, taught him some amazing tricks and soon they were quite a pair. Why, they had even performed at a circus! Those were heady days. Yummy bananas every day, a good bed to sleep on, simian friends who spoke the same language, life was good till the government decided to ban animals from performing and put an end to everyone’s livelihood. They were back on the streets living hand to mouth till Katrina chanced upon that very weird ad. Soon Madame X turned him into a first-class jasoos, a spy! Now, instead of just eating bananas and performing tricks, he was a respected member of a human team.

‘Tuk Tuk should be somewhere near the queen’s tomb. That’s where he had dropped us off. He has to be there and please, Bandar, for bhagwan’s sake, don’t get distracted …’ Pappu had warned him. But an hour of snooping around the spooky tomb, there was still no sign of that rickshaw.

He peered through the falling darkness and tried to see past the shadows that were fast engulfing the now deserted construction site. Wait! There he is! Bandar spotted the familiar bulky beetle shape parked just outside the walls of the Taj Mahal. There was Tuk Tuk! He scampered off and landed with a massive thud on the new snazzy canopy that had Bollywood babes hanging on to Rajnikanth’s arms, and proudly handed Tuk Tuk the note.
